Talking point 5 Westheimer and Kahne

While reading this blog i tend agree with most of the stuff that they are explaining in this article. I really think service learning is important because I really think it prepares your for the real world. it really is important for our legislators to like teachers, and service learning because I think it really helps the student be prepared once they graduate college. Once I first i thought it was going to be a challenge but as i kept going it really started to become a lot easier. The students that i am working with are great and are really preparing me for the real world once I leave Rhode Island College. If our politicians ever took this away from aspiring students, I really think a lot of people would be lost in a classroom. I have learned so much from this experience so far and it really is challenging me every time i enter the classroom.

The three quotes that I liked in this article was:

1. "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"

I think when JFK said that in his inaugural address I really think it spoke to all of us as American citizens. I think by giving back to your community really helps a person go along way because it really is important for a lot of people. It is also important to help students anyway that we can as professionals because it goes a long way because then the students start to look up to you as a awesome person. I think my students look up to me because they like the way i am teaching them and at certain points, i make them laugh a little bit.

2. "Mr. Johnson explained, students would interact with those less fortunate than themselves and would experience the excitement and joy of learning while using the community as a classroom."

When I come into this classroom i know some of the students come from less fortunate environments, because my teacher knows most of their back rounds. I feel really bad for them, because once they leave school they have to go back to it. With me there i try to help them out the best way that i can so i can make them happy and successful no matter what. Especially when a student is having a bad day i try and make them feel better anyway that i can.

3. "Educators and legislators alike maintain that service learning can improve the community and invigorate the classroom, providing rich educational experiences for students at all levels of schooling."

This is really important because this is what service learning is all about. Going into an unfamiliar place and trying to learn new things. When I first walked in i had no idea what to do, and i was nervous. I guess that is what happens, but as i keep going i know i will have fun with my students and have an awesome time. I am really glad this is around because it really helps me understand how to teach, what to say to a student and how to go about teaching them new things. If service learning was never around I wouldn't know what to do

In conclusion, I really want to be a teacher one day because i really love what i am doing right now. It is really a perfect fit for me and i know i want to do this for the rest of my life. Many people told me not to go into education because of how challenging it is. I really find it easy, except for what i am doing right now in a classroom i really don't need a degree for what I am doing because i think i have enough knowledge in my head to help students. But i am not going to argue with rules because that wont get me anywhere and i know it. As long as i keep at it i know i will do well, and if it wasn't for our awesome politicians back then we would never have had to wonderful opportunity to go help out students
